Study programme

Public International Law (Research Master's)

First year

During the first year, students gain an understanding of the foundations of public international law and, more specifically, the international rule of law. They are also trained in theories and methods of legal research. Under the supervision of a senior researcher, students form small groups that contribute to research projects being carried out within the Amsterdam Center for International Law (ACIL). Master classes help students to improve their writing, presentation, debating and argumentation skills.

Second year

In the second year, students will have the opportunity to specialise in a topic within the theme of the international rule of law, for example in the field of human rights, criminal law or humanitarian law. This can take place in Amsterdam or at a foreign law school in Europe, the United States or elsewhere. Students take part in a research seminar, and are intensively supervised as they conduct research for their theses. The theses are expected to meet high academic and scientific standards.
